Most of us including myself have become hooked on the Twitter phase and love the potential that it can offer our business but what really drives us insane is the spam. We HATE it and wish we could wipe it out and never let it anywhere near us ever again.
I remember when spam first became a major issue it was very early on in my online business and it involved me getting my manhood increased which I found a very weird idea for a young woman. Since then though I have had every single spam message that you can imagine whether it has been about opening a bank account or getting a course of viagra. This doesn't annoy me in the slightest as I expect it and as the messages aren't that frequent (about three a day) a simple delete and they are forgotten about.
But the launch of spam into my internet marketing business really does bug me and if anyone tries to spoil my online business I will block them in a flash.
My first experience with it was one the Facebook community I was inviting a few new friends when I joined and it amazed me how many people wrote on my wall with a simple link through to them and no hi thanks for being my friend just pure spam. As you can imagine these people have been swiftly deleted from my wall and I haven't chatted to them since. But if they had simply said how are you? nice to be friends I would have visited them and found out about their own links without the need to spam on my wall.
This brings me to the twitter following/spamming methods whichever way you want to look at it there will always be spammers on twitter you have to make a simple choice put up with it or leave the site forever. I chosen to stick around just because I love Twitter and want to be part of it whether it is for business or pleasure.
The main issue for me with spamming on Twitter is the direct messages that people receive when they start following someone on Twitter which are more commonly known as automated direct messages. Firstly I don't mind the majority of them we want to introduce ourselves to our fellow Twitters and this is the best way of doing it. I don't class this as Twitter spam because it is normal and as you are following the other person communicating with them in this manner can't be considered as spamming.
However there are two types of twitter automated messages that annoys me so much that I will block them in a flash:
More than 140 characters - This just looks awful and as Twitter was built around the 140 characters or less idea why should I be receiving huge automated messages from someone. I wish I knew who had created the program that allows this as I would like to have strong words with them as this is not on. I must have blocked thousands of people for this since I joined Twitter last year and the more people I block the more start following this method. So if you see anyone sending you a message like this block them so that they can't be stopped. The other reason for blocking them is because if they can't think of anything worthwhile to say in the first message they send you what are they going to send you in normal tweets?
Gain 16,000 followers in 90 days - well this has to be the worst ever twitter product to go on release and I can't believe people actually paid $27 for this! I have read endless bad reviews about this product on Google and the plug has finally been pulled on it once and for all. The sad fact is though that those promoting it via their automated direct messages all seem to have less than 1,000 followers after a year on Twitter. So if they are promoting this amazing product and it hasn't even worked for them why should we listen to them? Because the product itself is so useless (it teaches you how to spam on Twitter) I feel like I am personally been spammed.
Also look at it on another level if you're getting the same message on twitter 100 times a day are you really going to click on the link at all. Its like getting 100 viagra messages a day something that is very unpleasant indeed.
@ Replies with links from people none followers - This really is the most annoying thing about Twitter and the higher the followers the worse it gets. They will target people will good followings (over 20,000) and just send them a message with @...... try this and that is all the send you. They are not followers of yours just someone that is spamming you. They have never even had a chat with you and use your username as a way of building up their own traffic. You see people with larger than average followings will get regular searches and this is where their username will get noticed. I must block about ten of these a day and hopefully they will give up in the end.
Too many tweets - Even if you are not a spammer this makes you look like one even if you didn't mean it to. Your tweets should never be greater than your followers and in most cases your tweets should be 25% of your following more than this and you don't look good. That's because many people will post @replies to all of their followers with the same tweet filling up the twitter community very fast. Others will send out several promotional messages five minutes a day, all day long and this looks very bad for business. I would recommend not tweeting more than 30 promotional tweets a day I do about 25 plus blog notifications which is wonderful and gives my followers a nice balance. I also use it for pleasure so customers don't just see a straight run of business tweets and gets me away from the spamming culture.
The reason why I am telling you all this now is because I want to show you that there is no need to spam, build amazing relationships with your fellow twitter members and you will get sale after sale without even trying. There is a lot of lovely people on Twitter and yes there is lots of spammers too and I would love to see a reduction in the spam but I don't think it can ever be wiped out.
